In this two-day hands-on workshop, participants will delve into the art and science behind creating moving sand sculptures. — mesmerising artworks where layers of colored sand slowly shift and flow within a sealed frame. Over the course of two sessions, participants will design and laser-cut their own frames, engrave a customised object or design, and finally assemble and fill their creations with sand and liquid to bring them to life. This workshop blends creative fabrication with fundamental fluid dynamics, offering a chance to experiment with materials, movement, and design. By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Understand the principles of balance and flow in moving sand art.
- Learn to operate a laser cutter for Cutting and engraving.
- Customise their artwork by engraving a personal object or design onto the frame.
- Mix and assemble sand and liquid components to achieve a smooth motion effect.
Day 1 – Design, Engraving & Fabrication: on (3 hours)
Introduction & Demonstration (30 mins)
- Design & Customisation (45 mins)
- Participants select or customise frame templates.
- Prepare engraving designs — such as a name, shape, or symbolic object — to personalise their frame.
- Laser Cutting & Engraving (1 hour)
- Cut acrylic or wood frame components using the laser cutter.
- Engrave the chosen design or object onto the frame surface.
- Frame Assembly (Dry Setup) (45 mins)
- Assemble frame parts without sealing.
- Ensure proper fit, alignment, and clarity for final filling on Day 2.
Day 2 – Sand, Liquid & Final Assembly (3 hours)
- Recap & Preparation (15 mins)
- Review previous work and prepare materials for liquid and sand assembly.
- Liquid & Sand Mixing (45 mins)
- Combine distilled water and glycerin to create the right viscosity for movement.
- Prepare and colour sand mixtures with fine and coarse grains for visual texture.
- Filling & Sealing the Frame (1 hour)
- Add sand and liquid carefully into the frame.
- Adjust air bubbles to balance
- Seal the artwork securely to prevent leaks.
- Testing & Personal Finishes (1 hour)
- Test flow movement by rotating the frame.
- Apply any final touches or decorative accents.
- Group sharing and documentation of final artworks.
