Founded by Basma Hamdy, a research-based designer, author, curator, and Associate Professor of Graphic Design at VCUarts Qatar, TypeAraby explores contemporary approaches to Arabic type while maintaining and promoting its traditional calligraphic roots as a vital mechanism for language sustainability.

The platform hosted and contributed to events, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and publications in Liwan that engaged local, regional, and international creative communities. During the residency, TypeAraby also conducted research within the Liwan archival library, exploring the history of Arabic type through the institution’s extensive collection of children’s books.
