Our residency program supports local and regional designers through mentorship, artisan collaboration, funding, studio access, and exhibition opportunities. At Liwan, residencies encourage creative growth while promoting locally sourced materials, production, and prototyping as part of Qatar’s growing design ecosystem.
Liwan hosts a diverse range of residencies, including international residents, special projects, local studio residents, and interdisciplinary creative practices.
2025
Liwan Craft Residency: Future Traditions & the New Authentic
The Liwan Craft Residency was an immersive program for designers and craftspeople based in Doha, Qatar. The residency challenged participants to engage deeply with the guiding theme of Future Traditions and the New Authentic: reimagining cultural heritage and craft for contemporary and future contexts.
Shaping and Crafting the Future Summer Residency 2025
During this 9-week design residency, by Liwan and Campus MaNa, participants trained in crafts, design, and architecture techniques by leading design experts in the picturesque region of Burgundy, France.
Ideas FROMM. Industry
A months long program hosted by Liwan in partnership with FROMM providing an immersive design experience for three selected Liwan members.
Ceramic Residency 2025
Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative built on the legacy of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture through the launch of a new Ceramic Residency Project, which welcomed renowned Indonesian ceramic artist Francisca “Kika” Puspitasudibyo to Doha in August.

The Project
Abdulrahman Alhamad was a resident at Liwan. Also known as Abdush, the Palestinian designer is based in Doha and brings together his background in civil engineering with a lifelong passion for fashion.

Residents Reham Mohamed, Eman Makki, Sara Al Afifi, and Hind Al Saad of (in)finite thought were studio residents at Liwan Design Studios and Labs, based in Studio 2/7 during their residency period.
2024
Jassim Al Nasrallah
Jassim AlNasrallah joined Liwan as a resident artist, bringing a contemporary approach to Islamic art and calligraphy. His practice explored the philosophy of Islamic art within modern contexts, bridging tradition with experimentation.
Benchellal Residency
Moroccan-Dutch designer Mohamed Benchellal spent over two years in Liwan as a resident, exploring Qatar’s local materials, fabrics, landscapes, architecture, and environment. His time at Liwan inspired him to create groundbreaking couture garments that were exhibited at the National Museum of Qatar.
