About the Launch
Al Journal by Liwan brings together essays, articles, reviews and visuals exploring contemporary design themes across the Middle East and beyond. Volume 2 turns to resilience: how design can respond to the challenges of our time, from sustainability and climate change to the basic human needs of identity, comfort, community, education and dignity.
Through film, music, photography, food and fashion, the issue looks at the many ways resilience can be expressed. It also asks how design can become a tool for empowerment, organisation and self-assertion, especially in conflict zones and environmental crises.
Featuring creatives and designers working at the forefront of today’s most pressing issues, the issue includes contributions on:
- Education spaces by Education Above All Foundation and Zaha Hadid Architects
- Material resilience in contemporary Qatar
- Craft traditions, including the Kashigars of Makli
- Building the Sudan Art Archive
- An engineer’s story in Gaza
- Designing a refugee camp
- Art, ecology and urgency in the Gulf
